OCLC NEWSLETTER

EIGHTH ANNUAL MEETING
8 October 1974
No. 74
The Eighth Annual Meeting of the Representatives of
The Ohio College Library Center will convene at Stouffer's
University Inn, 3025 Olentangy River Road, Columbus, Ohio
at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, 8 November 1974.
TERMINAL INSTALLATIONS RISE
As of 20 September 1974 there are 315 CRT terminals
installed and on-line to OCLC's computer. The big leap
in terminal installations occurred in August when 80 CRT
terminals were installed in various institutions. The
Center staff is now preparing for another big push in
terminal installations - SOLINET. SOLINET ' s 99 institutions
will require the installation of 158 terminals over a
seven-month period that is scheduled to begin in midDecember,
1974.

SCREEN MESSAGE WHEN SYSTEM IS DOWN
Hello. System problems prevent on-line
operations. Further details will be
made available as the problem is diagnosed.
Thank you for your patience.
The above message now appears on CRT screens when OCLC's online
system malfunctions. The computer transmits the message
when a terminal operator depresses the "SEND" key while the
system is down. Terminal operators now receive immediate information
about the status of the system without calling. OCLC.
Temporary problems with the on-line system ·~w:e~l ':nO"t""'Prevent ,
transmission of the message to terminals. Because problems with
the system are usually temporary, involving peripheral equipment
and not the central processing unit, the computer can transmit
the message.
OPTIONS FOR ACCESSIONS LISTS
OCLC offers accessions list to libraries on semi-monthly,
monthly, and quarterly frequencies. Accessions lists representing
periods of time longer than three months are not
economically feasible for the Center to produce. Therefore,
OCLC produces accessions lists for current material and requests
that libraries ask only for current accessions to be in lists.
PROPER CARE OF THE DATA SET 201 C (DATAPHONE 2400)
The Data Set 201 C (modem or Dataphone 2400) is essential
for communication between the CRT and the computer. Proper
care of the modem requires non-technical common sense in two
ar'ea~ ';' r 'placement and • hand:hiflg. · • ~ ·"~ ' \''.!..!= ' .!. '' '·! ._. ~'='..!.....!... ' '·' ~ "LJD'.L::::>'-[UVv
The modem should be in a safe place where it will not be
kicked, bumped or otherwise damaged. Even a slight jolt,
however accidental, can produce heinous system malfunctions .
An ideal location for a modem is on a table against ~ wa~l,
safely out of the way.
Handling the modem requires caution on the part of operators.
There are five buttons on the front of the modem that are for
testing purposes only. Terminal operators should use these
buttons only on instructions from the Center's engineering
staff or the telephone company. Accidental activation of one
of these test buttons can bring down not only one CRT terminal
but a branch line of the network.
