Looking ahead to 2011
2010 has been year of significant progress for
the OCLC cooperative. Members adopted a
new policy for use of WorldCat records and
completed the transition to a new governance
structure. Use of OCLC services continued at
strong levels, and WorldCat grew faster than
ever. Moreover, libraries began to implement
OCLC’s new, Web- scale services.
We at OCLC intend to build on that momentum in the coming
year. As this issue of Cooperative eNews shows, we are off to
strong start.
We look forward to seeing many of you at the ALA Midwinter
Meeting, January 7- 10, in San Diego, where we have scheduled
a number of events that will help keep you apprised of OCLC’s
plans and activities.
I would like to call your attention to two events in particular. You
can either go to these meetings in person, or they will come to
you via the Web.
The Americas Regional Council ( ARC) Members Meeting will
convene January 7, from 8 a. m. to noon Pacific Time, with ARC
Chair Anne Prestamo presiding. This is your chance to get
involved in the governance of your OCLC cooperative.
Also on January 7, from 1: 30 p. m. to 4: 30 p. m., OCLC will
conduct a symposium on “ Transformational Literacy: Life Stages
and Libraries.” This is an opportunity to hear the views of
anthropologist Mimo Ito on the growing role of information
technology and lifelong learning.
We hope you will be able to join us either in person or virtually.
Details of these events and others are inside this issue of
Cooperative eNews , where you can view the agenda and
register online.
As we look ahead to 2011, OCLC’s public purposes of furthering
access to the world’s information and reducing library costs
remain vitally important.
We at OCLC thank you for your participation in the cooperative
and send our best wishes for the coming year.

OCLC Symposium: Transformational Literacy: Life
Stages and Libraries
1: 30 p. m. – 4: 30 p. m. Pacific Time
Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel, Indigo Ballroom A/ B
Every day, libraries help people transform their
lives. But nowhere is that role more apparent— and
important— as when people move from one life
stage to another. Join OCLC and a panel of
distinguished guests for a discussion on the need
for information and preparation during these vital
" between" stages.
Mimi Ito, cultural anthropologist and researcher at
the University of California, Irvine, will present a
keynote on the growing role of information
technology and continuous learning in the lives of
young people and students. After a quick snack,
Michael Stephens from the Graduate School of
Library and Information Science at Dominican
University ( and author of " Web 2.0 & Libraries") will
then moderate a discussion on transformational
literacy with Mimi; James LaRue, Director of
Douglas County Libraries in Castle Rock, Colorado;
and Joanie Chavis, Dean of the Learning Resource
Center at the Baton Rouge Community College
Magnolia Library. As always, the audience will be
invited to join in with questions and discussion.
This event will stream live from the Web.

As 2010 comes to a close, we’re reflecting not only on the past year, but on the past five years
since RLG and OCLC successfully merged. Nearly five years ago, RLG and OCLC joined to
create a venue where affiliated institutions could collectively identify, analyze, prioritize and design
scalable solutions to shared information challenges. Since then, OCLC Research and the RLG
Partnership have brought to fruition a powerful, globally influential program of work that has
provided significant value to the library, archive and museum communities worldwide. OCLC would
like to thank the RLG Partners for their collaboration, which has resulted in an impressively large
array of initiatives, publications and achievements, some of which are highlighted in this document.

Reason # 24: Offer simple and advanced
searching options in the same interface.
You can embed the simple WorldCat search box into any blog
or Web page, making it easy for your users to begin their
search when most convenient. Advanced WorldCat. org search
options allow " power users" to create complex queries and limit
results by language, format and date of publication.

FirstSearch database reports now
COUNTER- compliant
OCLC FirstSearch database reports are now
COUNTER- compliant, having passed a standards
compliance audit for Counting Online Usage for
Networked Electronic Resources ( COUNTER).
COUNTER provides usage statistics reports that allow
libraries to compare database usage across vendor
platforms in a consistent, credible and compatible
manner.
OCLC’s COUNTER reports measure journal use within databases, including download methods,
database use at the session and search level, turn- aways and service use. OCLC has provided
usage statistics for FirstSearch databases for many years. In response to requests from member
libraries, OCLC COUNTER reports are now available to help members more easily meet certain
requirements within their institutions.
COUNTER has also worked with NISO on OCLC’s SUSHI ( Standardized Usage Statistics
Harvesting Initiative) to develop a protocol to facilitate the automated harvesting and consolidation
of usage statistics from different vendors. The SUSHI server is registered on the NISO site.
Launched in March 2002, COUNTER ( Counting Online Usage of Networked Electronic Resources)
is an international initiative serving librarians, publishers and intermediaries by setting standards
that facilitate the recording and reporting of online usage statistics.

Recording now available
A discussion of ethics has been part of the professional landscape since 1903 when Mary Plummer,
ALA President, presented the first code of ethics for librarians. Since then, the information services
landscape has only become more challenging and complex.
View the recording from OCLC and Library Journal’s second “ Virtual Symposium to learn about the
ways in which ethical considerations affect innovation, privacy issues and how libraries deliver
services. More than 900 individuals participated in this symposium virtually, which took place on
November 17 and featured:
Liza Barry- Kessler, Managing Partner, Privacy Council, LLC
Gary Price, Librarian and Consultant; Founder and Editor, Resource Shelf
Wayne Bivens- Tatum, Philosophy and Religion Librarian, Princeton University Library.
