Information literacy as
invitation to lifelong learning
Many of you are gearing up for the academic
year. This issue of the eNews is dedicated to
those who provide information literacy
instruction and outreach. Directing patrons to
the valuable resources and services that
libraries provide is the key to academic success
and to cultivating lifelong learning.
As Chair of the Americas Regional Council ( ARC), I would like to take
this opportunity to provide a quick orientation for those of you still new
to the ARC, to ensure that you are successful in taking advantage of
all that the OCLC cooperative has to offer.
Any staff member of any library, museum or archive located in the
Americas is invited to participate in the ARC! We want your input and
your assistance. Here are a few ways that you can help us continue
the success of the cooperative:
Volunteer for a committee— in addition to elected positions, we
also appoint member volunteers to committees for
Communications, Nominations, Bylaws and Interest Groups. E-mail
us if you’re interested in serving on one ( or more) of these
committees.
Join one or more of the Interest Groups on the Member- to-
Member Forum.
Spread the word! Please share the Member- to- Member Forum
with your co- workers and with professional groups and
associations.
In October, the OCLC Global Council delegates elected by the ARC
membership will attend the OCLC Global Council virtual meeting. This
is our opportunity to raise issues of importance to our region with
Global Council and OCLC’s leadership. Throughout all of these
activities, make your voice heard! If you have something you would like
me to share— success stories and best practices, challenges you are
facing, opportunities for cooperation— please e- mail me your ideas and
suggestions on how, together, we can move the cooperative forward.
Please also join me in acknowledging the dedication and hard work of
last year’s Executive Committee Members, who successfully
transitioned the previous Members Council to the new Global and
Regional Councils. Their efforts culminated in our first ARC Annual

Feature Story
Information literacy instruction and outreach— Trends in
microlearning and learning on demand
The Americas Regional Council Member- to- Member social networking site hosts many interest
groups, which you are welcome to join. Recently, Joseph Dudley, Librarian at Bryant & Stratton
College’s Cleveland Campus, started a discussion on the Resource Discovery Interest Group:
“ What are some techniques that you are using to teach patrons about information
systems? This semester I am creating instructional handouts and sending them out
by e- mail, visiting classrooms and demonstrating systems in the reference
interview. What else is working?”
With so many libraries preparing for the upcoming academic year, we thought this was a timely topic
and we contacted several subject matter experts to share their current strategies as they relate to to
information literacy and outreach services. Here’s what we found:
Mark Vargas, Library Director, The Robert and Mary Rita Murphy Stump
Library, Saint Xavier University, shares how implementing WorldCat Local
has positively impacted information literacy instruction at his institution.
“ The single most important side effect of implementing WorldCat Local was
the impact it had on teaching. We used to dedicate time to showing them all
of the various places they had to look and all of the buttons they needed to
push. With WorldCat, we have basically eliminated the teaching of the tool.
Now, we spend more time teaching them what research is really about—
evaluating information and using critical thinking skills.”

Christine Drew, Associate Director of Research & Instruction Services,
Worcester Polytechnic Institute’s George C. Gordon Library, leads the
Worcester Polytechnic Institute’s ( WPI) information literacy and assessment
initiatives and provides research education to students, faculty and staff.
“ As a result of our outreach efforts with global project students, when
surveyed over the past few years, more than 94 percent of the students
have consistently agreed or strongly agreed that research consultations with
librarians improved their ability to perform research for their project. While we
are very proud of this statistic and will continue to do these types of
consultations, we are also working toward developing a wider variety of brief
online microlectures for our students and faculty.”

Developer collaboration leads to
implementation of NCIP 2.0
Early this spring a community of library developers interested in
interoperability between discovery interfaces and integrated
library systems formed a working group to build on the work of
the DLF ILS- DI Task Force. After several months of
collaboration between this developer community and OCLC
team members, we are excited to announce our plans to
contribute an implementation of version 2.0 of the NCIP
standard, derived from the OCLC Web- scale Management
Services codebase, to the eXtensible Catalog’s open- source
NCIP Toolkit. This contribution will advance the library
community’s efforts to simplify interoperability options for any
library or software provider that wishes to include item
availability and other information from the integrated library
system in its discovery interface display.

OCLC Partner Updates
Your RDA roadmap: resources,
training and tools for success
RDA is here, and you may be wondering what this
means for your library, what changes need to be
made and which practices are best.
RDA: Resource Description and Access ( RDA) is the
new cataloging standard that will replace AACR2. It
offers libraries the potential to change significantly
how bibliographic data is created and used. OCLC is
committed to supporting members who wish to
implement RDA in their libraries, but will not require
that libraries adopt RDA.
Last October OCLC offered an informative online
session on RDA. Now, many of our Partners, Amigos
LYRASIS, MCLS, Minitex, MLNC and OHIONET, are
making their RDA information and educational
offerings available to you.
There is a wide range of RDA information available through the OCLC RDA Resource page. There
you can find informational links to the OCLC policy with respect to RDA, training materials, a
schedule of upcoming courses from our Partners, and the RDA Toolkit, which was co- published by
the American Library Association ( ALA), Canadian Library Association ( CLA) and Chartered
Institute of Library and Information Professionals ( CILIP).
For Partner classes on RDA visit the OCLC Training Portal, and for more information on RDA
resources such as the OCLC policy on RDA, the RDA Toolkit and RDA prospectus, visit the
OCLC RDA Resource page.
