Partners in a Global
Cooperative
Furthering access to information is one of the values
our profession fosters and promotes. It is a
democratic value. Cooperation and collaboration are
essential to realizing access to the world’s
information and it requires effort on the part of all
OCLC members. Such effort yields benefits that
surpass what we’ve traditionally associated with our
membership, such as cost- sharing.
The relationships that connect access to information
with information seekers are limited less by
geographic borders and technological barriers than
ever before. OCLC members continue to find
innovative ways of expressing these connections
through our collaborative initiatives. While the global
membership community and Web- scale
technologies enable the syndication of access to
information, the sum of the world’s local community
treasures add context, depth and value. Through
careful stewardship of our local historical documents
and other significant works, all OCLC members,
regardless of size, impact how and what the world is
learning.
Together, we are partners in helping to bring
understanding and clarity to our histories, our
present circumstances and our future. Through our
joint efforts, we also better understand our own
environment and can develop the dynamic solutions
we need to benefit both our individual and collective
needs.
In my role as Global Council President, I invite you
to become an active participant by attending the
upcoming Regional Council member meeting in
Boston and volunteering on one of our committees
dedicated to issues that are essential to the work
that you do. OCLC is our cooperative and we need
the voices of all members to continue to grow in our
ability to connect information with information
seekers globally. Together we will achieve even
better service for our users.

Building the virtual library dedicated to Puerto Rico’s former
Governor, Dr. Pedro Rosselló
Meet Sarai Lastra, PhD, Vice Chancellor of Information Resources/ Director of Virtual
Library at Universidad del Turabo
“ A typical meeting
with the former
Governor and his
wife involves us
showing them photos
and documents, and
getting instant
feedback. They give
us the keywords,
information and
provide the context—
who, what, where
and when— from their
experiences.”

Recently, Universidad del Turabo ( UT) began a very
special project— building both a digital and physical library
dedicated to Puerto Rico’s former Governor, Dr. Pedro
Rosselló González. Rosselló held the office for eight
years and Universidad del Turabo is now the permanent
legal repository for his government papers.
Founded in 1972, Universidad del Turabo is located 15
miles southeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Belonging to
the Sistema Universitario Ana G. Méndez ( SUAGM), UT
has campuses in Yabucoa, Cayey, Naguabo, Isabela and
Ponce, and programs in Florida ( Orlando and South
Florida). UT currently serves a student population of more
than 15,000 students, more than 180 faculty members
and 600 senior lecturers.
“ Similar to a presidential library, the
mission of the former governor’s library
is to support, preserve and make
available for research the documents,
audio- visual materials, photos and
memorabilia,” said Sarai Lastra, PhD,
Vice Chancellor of Information
Resources/ Director of Virtual Library at
UT. Sarai and her team, comprised of
one archivist, an assistant and two
additional team members, have
embarked on digitizing and preserving
the 26,035 audio tapes, 7,791 VHS
tapes and 371 videos, and countless
documents, letters and other
memorabilia that recount Dr. Rosselló’s
government career.

first U. S. President to have born- digital documentation, such as e- mail, Web pages and other
electronic formats. When they began planning and building the structure of the library, they also
began digitizing and uploading pieces of the collection to the Web site so that everyone could follow
the growth.”
As Sarai’s team works to digitize the materials, one of the key advantages they are discovering is that
they are developing their standards according to the digital preservation system as they create it.
“ We’ve designed this project as a pilot. We’re learning from OCLC and we’re testing which formats
will work best for us. We’re defining these things in iterative phases of testing.”

Counting clicks: Leveraging WorldCat to build members’ presence
beyond the library
One of the many benefits of membership is the ability to
transform our collective efforts into meaningful business
relationships. Raising the visibility of libraries on the Web and
connecting libraries to their users via popular Internet sites has
been an ongoing initiative for many years. From Amazon to
WeRead, OCLC builds strategic partnerships with some of the
most recognized players in the mainstream information industry.
Cindy Cunningham, Director, Business Development, leads a
team that works on behalf of OCLC members to identify potential
partners in the consumer Web space and negotiate agreements
that will increase traffic to library Web sites and services.
“ Because of our work together through WorldCat and other
initiatives, members have a voice in the larger information
community. Members’ contributions to the cooperative provide
ways to enhance consumer sites,” says Cindy. These consumer
sites in turn improve the discoverability of all members’
collections and services well beyond individual library Web sites.
The strategic relationships that the cooperative explores involve
mutual linking, or an exchange for data that further enhance and
promote what member libraries have built and sustained for
nearly 40 years.
“ These efforts on behalf of member libraries have accounted for
nearly 5 million referrals to WorldCat. org in 2009. And what is
more impressive, this number has increased by more than 25
percent from 2008,” she continues. “ In addition to many formal
relationships, we also have affiliations with companies that crawl
WorldCat. org or relationships that involve exchanging data that

Monthly Member Q& A: How does the eSerials Holdings Service
work?
Your Member Services team is connecting with members throughout the U. S. and is taking notes on
the questions you ask. In upcoming issues, we’ll share a question from the community with all
Cooperative eNews subscribers.
How does the eSerials Holdings Service work?
The eSerials Holdings service is designed to automate the process of setting and maintaining your
electronic serials holdings in WorldCat to increase their visibility and use. The eSerials Holdings
service is a partnership with EBSCO, Serials Solutions, TDNet and WorldCat Link Manager, and is
available at no additional charge to OCLC members that subscribe to Connexion, OCLC FirstSearch,
WorldCat Resource Sharing, WorldCat Collection Analysis and other WorldCat- related programs. The
eSerials Holdings service also provides you with the option of setting up deflection rules. You can
choose your lending level for these materials so that you don't receive ILL requests for items your
library can’t lend.
As an option, your library can receive MARC bibliographic records that correspond with your eSerials
holdings updates. Records can be customized to meet your needs, with options including add or
delete fields and customized URL links in 856 fields. There is a nominal charge for the record delivery
option, which is based on the number of titles delivered.
