COM CATALOG SERVICES OFFERED
ACTION FOR LIBRARIES
Editor: Joyce Coyne
JoAn S. Segal, BCR Interim Execu r, has announced the availability
of COM catalog services through a contract recently signed with Brodart, Inc., of
Williamsport, PA. Under this contract, individual libraries will be able to realize
savings because of the higher volume of titles being aggregated by the participating
BCR libraries.
BCR is particularly pleased to be able to offer this service, for several
reasons. We are impressed with the Broadart staff and their willingness to work on
the problems associated with preparing and maintaining COM catalogs for libraries.
We are delighted that the concept of networking in this case means libraries can
enjoy a cost advantage by cooperating with other libraries. We are also excited at
the prospect of libraries preparing aggregated machine-readable files which may be
used at present to prepare COM catalogs, and, as the technology develops, will serve
them well as the basis for an online catalog.
BCR also has a contract with Information Design for ROM-4 Readers, should
libraries opt for a microfilm-format. No equipment recommendations are being made
for microfiche readers.
We urge you to make use of this service and hope it will aid libraries and
library users in the Region by improving bibliographical control over library
materials.
THE COLORADO ORACLE
Colorado librarians will have the opportunity to participate in a project being
carried out by Darrell Humphrey, candidate for a doctorate in Education at the
University of Colorado, Boulder. Humphrey's project, called the Colorado ORACLE, is
an experiment using a dial-up telephone network to provide electronic message and
data communications to libraries.
He is developing an electronic mail facility, combined with the capacity for
computer conferencing, all joined with an extensive database of information of
interest to librarians, such as member lists, association news, and conference
( information. For more, call Humphrey at 492-2032.
