AACR 2 and its impact on Ii is an issue which looms large
on the horizon of librarianship. widespread networking, shared
cataloging and interdependence, no library will fail to feel this impact. Because
of its unique relationship to the libraries in the Region, and particularly because
of its role as a broker of shared cataloging services, BCR has an obligation to help
libraries learn the new rules and be prepared for the implications of LC's closing
of its catalog and new forms of entry found in shared cataloging databases and even
on purchased card sets.
With many different groups becoming involved with AACR 2 training, a need is
emerging for coordination of training efforts. In particular, there are some parts
of the Region which are rich in resources and others where there is a minimum of
expertise, financial support, and time available to support an adequate training
program. Therefore, BCR is planning to coordinate training efforts in several
ways.
1. BCR is an ideal place to house a central source of information about all of
the AACR 2 efforts undergoing development and implementation in the Region (and,
perhaps, nationally).
2. BCR can be a focal point for the trainers to discuss the various training
models that mayor will be used.
3. BCR would like to be involved in,the arrangements for a model program in
one part of the Region in order to be better able to advise others in the Region
about setting up training.
However, BCR's role as a teacher/tr"ainer should be relatively minor. BCR lacks
the manpower for extensive instruction, although it will make its limited manpower
resources available to other groups.
In order to promote its coordinating role, BCR surveyed the RTSD pre-Conference
participants prior to the AACR 2 session at ALA in Dallas. The results were overwhelmingly
in favor of BCR assuming a leadership role in coordinating the transition
to AACR 2. The participants expressed a willingness to take part in a Regional
