Dr. Shirla R. McClain of Akron became a member of the
State Library Board January 16 , taking the oath of
office at the beginning of the Board meeting. Dr.
McClain was appointed to the Board by the Sta t e Board
of Education to succeed Mr. Raymond R. Brown on the
five- member Board.
Dr. McClain is an Assistant Professor in Elemen-tary
Education at Kent State University , where she
supervises student teachers and teaches courses in elementary education . She is
active in community and education pursuits, both statewide and nationally. She is
also the author of journals on local and ethnic history and frequently speaks at national
' conferences. She serves on the advisory board of Radio Station WAKR I S Community
Rel ations Board, and as consultant to the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity , part of
the Akron Chapter ' s Local Black History Proj ect . Her interes t in local black history

has lead her to research and compile a traveling
exhibit on " Akron ' s Black History ."
A graduate of the University of Akron . Dr .
McClain taught in the Akron Public Schools for
18 years before joining Kent State University in
1976. Her teaching experience has been at several
educational levels : preschool. primary,
upper elementary, and secondary . She has served
as classroom teacher , remedial teacher for mathematics,
reading, and Engl ish . and as an educational
specialis t .
In 1976 Dr. McClain was named the woman of
the year by the Akron Chapter of the Negro Business
and Professional Women . . She received the
Akron Urban League's Achievement Award in 1975 .
In 1976 she was named an honorary member of the
Black ~ aw Enforcement Offi cers' Association for
her community service . She and her husband Henry
are the parents of two teen- aged children .
