Several Library SeIVices and Construction
Act (L50\) grants were awarded by the State
Library Board at its meeting December 10,
1985, at Columbus. Title I Areas With
Inadequate Service grants totaling $247,301
were awarded to respective administering
libraries to fund the multicounty cooperative
(MeC) library systems' projects from January
1,1986, through April 30, 1986. Funds for the
period May 1 through December 31, 1986, will
be approved upon receipt of the forthcoming
FFY 1986 LSO\ grant award.

State Library to Host Second National
BooknIobile Conference
In 1985 more than 50 persons
representing 1.'} states attended the
State Library of Orno's first rural
bookmobile conference. The library

December issue of NEWS from the
State Library heralds a change in
fonnat for our monthly publication.
As you will notice, the listings for
Documents, Library SCience, the
FilmNideo Guide and Directory
Update are not included. These will
be mailed under separate cover".
Our new fonnat will allow more
space for in-depth coverage of
activities of State Library staff. Look
for the first of these articles in our
January issue. We hope you will find

bookmobile conference set for June
18, 19 and 20 at Columbus. "Quality
as a Basic Ingredient" is the theme,
and subjects will include
automation, effective patron service
and improved equipment.
Recreational vehicle design will be
addressed in an attempt to provide
more economical and functional
bookmobiJes.
John Christenson, Director,
'Il"averse des Sioux Library System,
Mankato, Minnesota, will deliver the
keynote address on quality in
programs and services as weD as
the concepts of extensiveness,
effectiveness and efficiency in
evaluation. Also speaking will be
Bernard Vavrek, Coordinator, Center
for the Study of Rural Librarianship,
Clarion, Pennsylvania, who will look
at how weD bookmobile programs
fare in quality. He will make
suggestions on methodologies to
strengthen the measurement of
quality.
Nancy Bolin, Specialist, Maryland
State Department of Education,
Division of Library Development and ·
Services will present the Maryland
model for training paraprofessionals
to respond effectively to patron
needs. Joseph Grunew-ald, Associate
Professor of Marketing, Clarion
University of Pennsylvania will offer
sources and strategies to detennine
and garner potential patrons.
