LIBRARY BOARD MEETS
The State Library Board awarded ten Library Services and Construction Act
(LSCA) Title I grants. Three of these grants are to fund programs which
address illiteracy. The Cuyahoga County Public Library, Cleveland received
$3,550 for Public Library Based Reading Clubs for Adult New Readers. This
program will assist at least 60 adult new readers to improve their reading
skills through book clubs to be established in at least four Cuyahoga County
public libraries. These clubs will be supported by the establishment of
community clubs for which a total of 450 books will be purchased. It is hoped
that this program will serve as a model and catalyst for the establishment of
at least eight additional book clubs in the greater Cleveland area.
The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County received $29,268 for
Libraries in Video Education--Reading Education for Adult Development
(LIVE-READ). This project will provide adult literacy services by
identification and redefinition of parts of the existing collection, and by
the selection of several new items •. notably newspaper subscriptions for .adult
new learners. Instructional videotapes and public service announcements will
be employed to inform the non-reader of the materials and services available.
The Kent Free Library received $9,328 for Project HAZE (Manage A-Z Easily)
which will familiarize 20 representatives of local social service agencies,
educators, community leaders and others of the problems and needs of the
illiterate of Kent and Portage counties. The project will also provide for
the establishment of a SOO-title collection appropriate for the new reader
with a reading level of 7th grade or below. Seventy new adult readers are
expected to be registered for library cards during the project year.

The Carnegie Public Library of Washington C.H. received $3,250 for
Elderspeak, a program designed to provide 355 elderly residents in six nursing
homes materials which will stimulate use of library services. Elderspeak will
serve both the reader and non-reader.
The Geauga County Public Library, Chardon, will fund Senior Focus with a
$10,907 Title I grant. This program will provide services to 100 temporarily
or permanently homebound senior citizens in the county. In addition. senior
citizen library registration is hoped to be increased 100 percent to 2,400 .
