Request for Comments for Input on use of the OCLC
On-Line Shared Cataloging Subsystem
On October 20, a small group of catalogers from the OCLC Networks
are meeting with OCLC to discuss the following problems connected
with use of the OCLC on-line shared cataloging system.
1. What is a duplicate record?
a. Is it acceptable to have separate records
for the same edition of a work when cataloged
by libraries that follow Library
of Congress and the Anglo American Cataloging
Rules and medical libraries that
follow National Library of Medicine
cataloging policies?
b. Should there be a separate record for each
kind of reproduction of an edition of a
work? For example, a separate record for
the hard copy edition, microfilm edition
in 16 mm, microfilm edition in 35mm, microcard
edition, large print edition, etc.
c. Should there be a separate record for a
hard bound and a paperback edition of the
same work?
d. If the only difference between a hard bound
edition and a paperback edition consists of one
of the editions being part of a series, should
there be a separate record for each edition?
2. Revision of the OCLe Standards for Tnput Cataloging.
a. What variable f-ields should be mundatory, required
jf availahle, optional, or omit?
