OCLC's plan
On 1 July 1975 the Center plans to implement an expanded version of holding symbols
which identify main holding libraries and individual libraries within a library
•
system. This code expansion will not affect the screen display of holdings informa- •
tion, but it will change the number of characters which a terminal operator must
enter in order to produce catalog cards for a library.
The OCLC system currently displays at the bottom of a bibliographic record a threecharacter
symbol for each participating institution holding the item described in
the bibliographic record. This three-character symbol consists of a two-character
institution code plus a one-character main holding library code.
When OCLC converts to three-character institution codes, the currently displayed
symbols for main libraries already in the system will become institution codes.
A symbol will change in the following manner: 1) a three-character code now assigned
to the main holding library will become the institution code (this symbol now appears
at the bottom of a bibliographic record); 2) a holding library code will appear on
catalog cards as the fourth character in the symbol. Hence, when cataloging for other
than the main library, a terminal operator will have to input in the 049 field a fourcharacter
symbol when expanded symbols become operational on 1 July 1975.
