SAVE File
On December 11, 1975, many libraries discovered that the SAVE
file was [ull of records and thus would not accept any new
records following the input of the SAVE command by terminal
operators. The following comments concerning SAVE should be
noted for future use of this aspect of the shared cataloging
system:
Although a maximum of 200 SAVE items per institution
has been used as a reference point,
the fact is that the SAVE file is not large
enough to accomodate that many records from
all the user libraries at one time. It is
not recommended that libraries plan on the
"200 spaces" in planning workflow and scheduling
of record revision from SAVE. If specific
revising time is scheduled each day, the
number of records put into SAVE by a given
institution will remain small enough that all
users should encounter no problem upon entering
new records into the SAVE file.
The information on SAVE in On-Line Cataloging
(p.63), while out of date in terms of the number
of SAVE items recommended, is still applicable
in terms of system usage:
"Since the Save Area is a common storage, the
larger a portion of the area used by one institution,
the less the space remaining for
others ... lf a library stores more than eX)
records per terminal, the library deprives
other libraries of storage."
