OHIO ·LIBRARY ASSOC IATION OFFERS BLUE CROSS/BLUE SHIELD PLAN TO MEMBERSHIP
The Ohio Library Association Board of Directors on May
16 , 1975 approved a proposal submitted by the Blue Cross/
Blue Shield Statewide Group office in Columbus f or the enrollment
of Ohio public libraries with two or more employees
throughout the state on local rates by each of the
seven (7) Blue Cross and Blue Shield Plans.
Enrollment will first be offered to all public libraries
not presentl y partic ipating in local Blue Cross/ Blue Shield
plans . The coverage to be provided is outlined in the enclosed
plan and at the rates quoted be l ow .
After the local Blue Cross plans r eprese ntatives have
contacted all unenroll ed libraries , they will then persona
l ly contact libraries presently participating in Blue Cross
plans to give them the opportunity t o upgrade their coverage
")to, at least , that shown in the OLA/BC/BS proposal . Rates
for presently enrolled l i braries wi l l depend upon present
experience.
An announcement of the plan was sent to library directors
and library board presidents. Library boards are empowered
(Sec. 3375 . 40 (L) O. R. C.) to "procure and pay all or part of
the cost of group life, hospi tal ization, surgical , or major
medical insurance or a combination of any of the foregoing
types of insurance or coverage , whether issued by an insurance
company , hospi tal service association, or non- profit
medi cal care corporation dul y licensed by the s tate , covering
its employees and in the case of hospitalization, surgical,
and major medical insurance , also covering the
dependents and spouses of such employees".
Many library boards already are providing paid hospital ,
medical and group lif e insurance. Various patterns of part
icipation was observed inthe OLA/BC/BS survey. A board may
pay 100% of the coverage or perhaps only the single rate.
The quoted monthly rates are for the OLA proposed package
for unenrolled libraries.
