COM,.,ITTEE APPOINTMENTS
COM LETED FOR
CO ING YEAR
August, 1982
he committee appointments have
......~ -.--- been completed for the 1982-1983
As my year as OLA President draws to a close, the comment
made by several former presidents seems to ring true.
Over the past several years as I worked with many of these
leaders, they remarked on how little could be accomplished
during their presidential tenure. To some extent this has
been true, but I feel that much has been accomplished this
past year. However, two of the significant accomplishments
that culminated this year can be initially attributed to actions
taken by previous preSidents during their terms. The
establishment of the CEU program, actually had its inception
during Hannah McCauley's term in 1979. The other is
the reorganization of OLA which had its beginnings with the
Profile and Potential Committee established by Charlotte
Leonard in 1978. In each of these two cases there were
scores of members involved in eventually producing reports
that could be acted upon by the Board and the membership
respectively. This fact, to me, points up the importance that
the Divisions, Committees, Task Forces, Roundtables, and,
most importantly, the individual member plays in directing
the course of the Association.
Presidents can generate ideas but it takes the member·
ship, individually and collectively, to expand, refine and
either bring those ideas to fruition or reject them. This fact
just underscores my theme for this year which has revolved
around people and involvement. It is impossible for OLA
Presidents to be successful without the efforts of an involved
membership. I sincerely believe that the success that
has been achieved thus far this past year is directly attributable
to the tremendous amount of work accomplished
by a talented and dedicated group of people who got involved
in the Ohio library Association.
I'm confident that this degree of involvement will continue
into Wally White's preSidential year. He has some exciting
plans for 1983 that will challenge all of us.
Finally, as I prepare to enter into the never-never land of
past preSidents, I thank the membership for the opportunity
to serve as your president this past year.

1982 ANNUAL CONFERENCE

association year. Fifty·four OLA memo
bers returned the form enclosed with
the May newsletter indicating they
would like to get involved in the
association.
Of the forms returned, thirty·one reo
quested committee aSSignments. Nine
have been placed on the committee of
their choice, eight requested chapter
conference committees which are
formed later this year, and two already Wallace White
had aSSignments in the association.
Many of the remaining requests for
committee assignments also included
requests for involvement in a division,
chapter or round table.
The remaining involvement request
forms have been forwarded to the ap·
propriate divisions, chapters or round
table officers. The leaders of those
units will consider those people requesting
aSSignments in their areas
both when appointments are made during
the coming year and when nominations
are gathered for elections for the
1983-1984 year.
OLA members in large numbers con·
tinue to demonstrate that they are willing
to work for the association. In the
last two years of committee appointments
only four of the fifty-four people
invited to serve were unable to accept
the assignment.
It is always an appropriate time to
make your specific interests in OLA
known to the association officers. As
you attend conferences and meetings
during the coming year and find activi-ties
to which you would like to add your
talents, make your interests known to
me or to Rachel Nelson (Cleveland
Heights-University Heights Public
Library), our new Vice President·Presi-dent
Elect. We will honor as many reo
quests as there are openings and ap·
pointments available.
Wallace White
Vice President-President Elect
