OLA/OLTA CONFERENCE HIGHLIGHTS
"Library Service in the 80s: Who plans? Who uses? Who pays?"
is the theme chosen for the annual Ohio Library Association/Ohio
Library Trustees Association, conference to be held October 23-25,
1980 at the Sheraton Columbus Hotel. Affiliate organizations, The
Academic Library Association of Ohio (ALAO), and Ohio Friends of
Libraries (OFL) have shared in the program planning and wi 11 be
attending the meeting.
Three preconference meetings are planned and Peggy Sull ivan,
ALA vice president-president elect, will keynote the conference
during the opening session Thursday afternoon .
Robert H. Rohlf, president, Public Library Association, on Thursday
, will discuss "the Planning Process for Public Libraries" and
Carolyn Feller Bauer, noted childrens literature authority wil!
Jamake Highwater outl ine "Fantastic Fun Ideas to Turn Kids Onto Books" on Friday.
Joan Petranovich, International Harvester, Chicago, and the most
J Popular speaker at MFLA in Milwaukee, will speak during the Friends/Foundation/Division
VI luncheon on Saturday.
The Conference Planning Committee has announced a gala on Friday evening to be staged
at the Columbus Museum of Art. Jamake Highwater, lecturer and writer on Indian culture,
(clearly one of the most original of the original Americans I iving today), has accepted
an invitation to speak and will autograph books during the wine and cheese reception.
The entire museum collection will be open to those in attendance.
Jamake Highwater is a writer of international prominence who has made significant
contributionR to the fields of American Indian studies, classical and contemporary
music criticism, dance history and world cultural interpretation.
Continuous talk tables have been st rongly s upported by conferees in the past and will
be provided again this year. Bu s iness meetings, exhibits, super-supper-savers, tours and
a pot-pourri of programs have been assembled for interest and enjoyment.
Peggy Sullivan, Assistant Commissioner for Extension Services ,
The Chicago Public Library and Vice President- President Elect, ALA
was an Associate Dean of Students at the Graduate Library School ,
University of Chicago . She has taught in six other library education
programs and has worked in public libraries in Missouri , Maryland,
Virginia and Illinois .
A graduute of Library Science at Catholic University of America,
j SulliVan received a Master 's Degree from Clarke College in Dubuque,
IA , and PhD. from the Graduate Library School , University of Chicago
. She will take office as president of ALA during the annual
meeting to be held June 29- July 5 in Neb) York .
