It was my pri v ilege at t he American Li­brary
Assoc iati on Conference in Dal las to
attend the Council of li brary Association
Executives (CLAE) l uncheon. Our own Chap
Parsons, who served as Cl AE pres ident from
1975-79 , was the luncheon speaker.
Chap's topic was " Let's Look Ahead for
Opportunities To Serve" and as he spoke I
thought of a ll the ways he has se rved not
only the I ibrary profession in Ohio, but
j throughou t the nat ion, s ince he joined OLA
as Execut i ve Director in 1964 . Se ldom a
week goes by that Chap doesn't rece ive sev­era
l letters and telephone calls from around
the count ry seek ing advice and/or informa­tion.
Maybe that ' s one of the reasons he
has been working so hard to estab li sh a
Chapter Relat ions office in A.L.A. to help
sha re the load .
As one who hides hi s I ight under that
proverbial bushel basket, it came as a
great surp ri se to Chap when the ClAE offi­cers
took off the basket and presented him
at t he lun cheon with a beautiful gaveled
plaque in recognit ion of his service to
CLAE and t he profess ion .
It is a timely honor, a long with hi s se ­lection
th is year as one of the distinguished
alumni of the School of Library Science at
Case Western University.

A. Chapman Parsons and to ba sk in the l ight
f his national recognition. So here's to
