Ohio Libraries (}o6 Cl'tfb '-NEWSLETTER of the OHIO LIBRARY ASSOCIATION
ON-LINE FOR TOMORROW
I ~ suite 409 • 40 south third street _ columbus, ohio 43215
Vol. 9, No.1
from the desk of ...
Hannah McCauley, President, OlA
Do libraries need a strong united voice
speaking out for their cause to legislators,
state and local officials, or can each go it
all alone lobbying for their individual con,
c erns? Can individual 1 ibraries provide
> "" standards, recommend job classification and
. salary goals for Ohio that will carry authoritative
weight with their boards and governing
bodies? Can individual libraries provide
all the continuing education opportunities
needed by their staff as well as exposure to
new ideas and programs just within their own
wa 11 s?
) If past history and the example of other
so-called interest groups show us anything,
itls that Itunited we standll and "divided we
fall ." How often we hear, why should I join
my professional organization, what good does
it do? The benefits are enormous and they
accrue over the years. OLAls voice is a respected
and listened to voice in the state
legislature. The standards and guidelines
developed with blood, sweat and tears by the
members do influence boards; and learning experiences
offered through conferences, workshops,
studies, etc. do provide benefits individually
and collecti ve ly to our members.
Every library in the state benefits from
the leadership that OlA provides and it can
provide that leadership only becau se of the
members who join.
