OCLC TEO-tNlCAL BULLETIN 61
OCLC Technical Bulletin 61 is enclosed with this newsletter. This technical
bulletin describes a projected set of user documentation entitled, On-Line
Systems, which will eventually replace the existing On-Line Catalog~-The
first volume in the set, Cataloging: User Manual, wiIT be sent dhect y to each
participating library. Do not discard your current set of documentation after
receiving the new manual, as the first volume will only replace selected elements
of On- Line Cataloging.
ERROR REPORTS
CIP RECORDS
According to infomation received from OCLC, CIP records fall into two
c.ategories. A) CIP records that are less than two years old should not be
reported by participating libraries for update unless there are errors in
the records such as typos or errors that would affect searching. B) For
CIP records that are two years old or more, libraries are r€'quested to submit
update reports to the network office. At the time this report is submitted
OCLC will update the record in the on-line lmion catalog. OCLC is not reporting
CIP records to the Library of Congress at this time since the Library
of Congress is aware of the problem and is presently working on clearing it
up.

SUBJECT HEADINGS
It is correct to report older subject headings which have since been
modernized by LC. These l~ill be changed by OCLC. If one subject heading has
been split into several different headings, the records will be referred to
LC for a decision as to which new subject entry to use. Subject headings
which result :in differences in opinions between catalogers, as well as those
,,,hieh are strictly local ones (i. e., 690 or 691), will not be a1 tered by
oeLe.
